Three F1 drivers, with at least a single podium each, are without an F1 cockpit for 2021. This leaves them scrambling to find the next chapter in their racing careers.
So, what new ventures, if any, beckon for them?
The Russian driver will go on a ‘holiday’ and then try to come back in F1 for 2022. Hence, he is still optimistic about a return to the pinnacle of motor racing.
“Ideally, 2022 would be the logical year to come back, because there are new regulations and teams need experience,” said Kvyat.
“I can assure you that experience is actually quite important, especially when new regulations come into play. I will be doing my best of course to come back because I feel like I have a lot to give to the sport.”
Was his sacking from F1 justified?
As one may know, at Red Bull, it can really get brutal for the drivers if they fall out of favor with the team. His cause was not helped by the fact that his teammate, Pierre Gasly, had one the best season of his career.
Also, it is important to note that they are only replacing with the much-hyped Yuki Tsunoda and not just any other driver. Hence, in some sense, the energy drinks outfit made the right call, though in an unforgiving manner, to replace him.
The Danish driver is ‘at peace‘ with Haas‘ decision to replace him. He will move to America to have a career in sports cars, and he has no regrets about that either.
“My first race is going to be Daytona [24 Hours], which I’m really super excited about. In a month’s time I will be driving the car at Daytona. That’s how I feel at the moment – not really sad about things; just really excited.”
Romain follows his teammate in an usual double-exit from the team. Many expected Haas to retain at least one of their two drivers. However, they elected to have an all-rookie lineup because of financial reasons.
Following his death-defying crash and escape in Bahrain, he is currently assessing his options. He is taking part in a virtual racing event, though that is just a one-time thing for him. Maybe a retirement from the track could be on the cards for the Frenchman.
What next in F1 for them?
So, while Kvyat‘s eyes are firmly on a return to the grid, Magnussen and Grosjean looked to have closed the book on their F1 careers. Though, one can never rule out a potential comeback in this mad and political world of motor racing.
All three were adept drivers who got into F1 on sheer merit. And there’s a certain sadness to see the back of them with a few pay drivers occupying other race seats. Maybe they find success elsewhere.
