Fernando Alonso has embarked on the decision to enter the arena of F1 in the 2021 season. He will venture out in the field with Esteban Ocon, with the Renault logo on his back.
The Spaniard left the F1 ground in 2018 for lagging in the score chart, racing for McLaren. He further joined the FIA World Endurance Championship the same year. Subsequently, he bagged the title there, competing for Toyota Gazoo Racing.
The two-time world champion will replace Daniel Ricciardo, who will further move to McLaren. Alonso hasn’t disclosed his contract tenure with Renault.
The French team is considering him to be a key racer to break the barriers and lead the team forward with his efficiency, skills, and strategies. The team is also counting on his years of experience and long list of accolades achieved.
The Renault team principal, Cyril Abiteboul, stated, “The strength of the bond between him, the team and the fans make him a natural choice. In addition to past successes, it is a bold mutual choice as well as a project for the future.
“His experience and determination will enable us to get the best out of each other to take the team towards the excellence that modern Formula 1 demands.”
He continued, “Alongside Esteban, his mission will be to help Renault DP World F1 Team prepare for the 2022 season in the best possible conditions.”
Fernando Alonso’s review on his way back to the F1 team
In his absence, Alonso clinched the Le Mans 24 Hours twice and also aced the WEC world championship. However, he claims to have missed the F1 grid and cockpit. The essence of speed and his prior endeavors in the Renault led him to follow the trail back to F1.
He remarked, “Renault is my family, my fondest memories in Formula 1 with my two World Championship titles, but I’m now looking ahead.”
“It’s a great source of pride and with an immense emotion I’m returning to the team that gave me my chance at the start of my career and which now gives me the opportunity to return to the highest level.”
He sees the stupendous opportunity for the team to climb up the ladder by the 2022 season. Further, he is stepping foot in the team with a motive to seat Renault at the table of dominating teams in F1.
The 39-year-old racer conveyed, “I have principles and ambitions in line with the team’s project. Their progress this winter gives credibility to the objectives for the 2022 season and I will share all my racing experience with everyone from the engineers to the mechanics and my team-mates.
“The team wants and has the means to get back on the podium, as do I.”
In the promotional filming day for the team, Alonso gripped the steering wheel of the F1 cockpit after two years. It gave him the taste of the speed and racing form he was missing.
The Spaniard stated, “It felt amazing to be able to drive these cars after two years and feel the speed again,” further continued, “How everything comes so fast, corner after corner, the performance under braking and all the things a Formula One car has to offer. To feel it once again felt nice.”
Alonso, with his skills and potential, has the capability to lead the team forward in the season ahead. Along with his partner Esteban Ocon, the racer will apply his strategies and tactics, aiming for the podium rank. Further, he will get the solution for his thirst for speed driving the F1 cockpits.
