George Russell may have given us another hint that he will be driving a Mercedes car in 2021!
VIEWER ADVISORY: Don’t read too much into this; these are just conspiracy theories.
Ever since he performed beyond all expectations in his singular Mercedes drive in 2020 at Sakhir, there have been various rumors linking him to a potential drive with the Silver Arrows. First, it was touted he would replace Hamilton’s teammate, Valtteri Bottas.
But ever since Hamilton himself has gotten himself into a contract lingo with the management, he’s become the odds-on favorite to take his seat. He’s poured more fuel to the fire recently with his mysterious withdrawal from the 2021 Virtual GP’s first round in Spielberg.
Not only did he withdraw at the last second, but he also recently posted a story on his IG platform which showcased his SIM racing setup having Mercedes‘ colors instead of Williams F1. We wonder what he may be hinting at!
Conspiracies aside, Russell could be simply trolling fans as rumors continue to float around in the F1 world.
But is George Russell taking over from Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes a real possibility?
Speaking in pragmatic terms, Russell taking over from Hamilton is an unrealistic possibility. He’s committed to the Williams F1 team for the 2021 season. Though Lewis has not put pen to paper on a deal yet, Toto Wolff is working extensively to seal the contract. He recently hinted at nearing an agreement with him.
“One day we’ll pull out the fountain pen. We have a really solid basis in our relationship, we have celebrated great successes together and we want to continue to do so in the future.”
But maybe like they say, never say never. Russell is not only Mercedes’ Academy graduate but also under a personal contract with Toto Wolff. He is genuinely talented who is wasted in an uncompetitive car. And after his inspired showing, he will be itching to get back in a top car.
