Toto Wolff Reveals Major “Disconnect” Between the English and Germans Led to Serious Issues at Mercedes

Mercedes recently took home their 7th consecutive constructors’ title in Formula 1. However, Toto Wolff revealed that it was not a simple task to bring the team together.

When the Austrian entered Mercedes, he felt that there was a “disconnect” between the German structure and the English operation within the team.

Speaking to Formula 1, Toto revealed the element that was lacking in the Silver Arrows was when he joined the team back in 2013. “What was lacking when I came there, there was a disconnect between the English operation and the German structure,” he said.

And not the right communication. I think that Stuttgart was never aware that there was a lack of funding.”

This miscommunication could have been the primary reason why Mercedes struggled through their early stages in the sport.

However, the moment Toto joined the team, things took a turn for the best as they established their dominance in the sport and have continued to maintain it for quite some time.

The disconnect translated itself into every part of Mercedes: Toto Wolff

The Mercedes boss revealed that the disconnect that persisted within the team spread into other parts of the organization.

It’s this disconnect translated itself into every part of the organization; communication, sponsorship,” he said. “There was always a certain skepticism towards the other headquarters.”

The entire organization had a single goal, and that was to win a championship title, but the serious lack of funding obstructed the team from even thinking about going for the title. Toto apparently pointed out to Mercedes that their “expectations” were too high.

One thing’s for sure. When you’re under-financed, you’re not going to win. If you have the same budget, you still have no guarantee that you are going to win, because it needs time and the right people,” Toto said. “So, I was pretty open about that.”

Mercedes eventually solved their financial problems and found their way back onto the path to greatness. Now that Mercedes have found their rhythm in the sport, they look unstoppable.

But how long can Mercedes maintain their dominance in Formula 1? Will Lewis Hamilton’s retirement be the turning point for them? Only time will well.
