Social media has risen leaps and bounds to get F1 drivers and teams closer to their beloved fans and enthusiasts. Naturally, some videos revolve around these entities and are bound to catch viewers’ attention.
The year 2020 was certainly eventful for the Formula 1 community. From the season being brought to a standstill to successfully conducting 17 races, it was a rollercoaster of emotions and one that had a lot of incidents.
Here is a list of some of the most viewed Formula 1-based videos in the year 2020. Given the popularity of race highlights and considering we’ve had some crazy races in 2020, the list doesn’t include any race highlights.
1) A 2020 Ferrari SF1000 model carved out of wood
Brought to us by the account named ‘Woodworking Art,’ the sculptor in the video beautifully carved out this year’s Scuderia Ferrari SF1000. Starting off with just some plain pieces of wood, the intricacy and detailing involved in the process to construct the model is an absolute joy to watch. The video accumulated just over 10 million views and also earned praise from users on YouTube.
2) The fiery crash of Romain Grosjean in the 2020 Bahrain GP
One of the worst accidents in recent times, the former Haas driver’s crash was a heart-stopping moment. The car slammed into the side barrier only to instantly burst into flames, which had everyone worried.
Fortunately, the brave Grosjean quickly escaped from the site of the crash. It also marked his very last race start in F1, as he later elected to go back home and continue his recovery.
3) Lewis Hamilton bursts left tire in British GP at Silverstone
In what was an ultimate drama on the penultimate lap in the British GP, defending champion Lewis Hamilton burst his left tire. Adding to the panicky situation, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was incoming from P2, albeit with a gap of nearly 30 seconds.
Regardless, Hamilton and his engineer both worked it out calmly over the team radio. Ultimately, the 35-year-old crossed the finish line with nearly 7.5 seconds in front of Max. However, it was surely a nerve-wracking moment for Mercedes in the race.
4) Biggest heartbreaks of F1 drivers in their careers
This video documented the sad, heart-wrenching moments for all F1 drivers in their careers to-date. The moments in the 2020 season included Hamilton’s shunt on Albon in the Austrian GP, where the latter was on course for his first podium.
It also highlighted Russell’s effort in Imola to pick up his first point for Williams, but ended up crashing into the side barriers. Safe to say, it was definitely a big blow for a few drivers in the sport this year.
5) Lando Norris’ final laps in Austria
It was a stellar performance from the McLaren driver that day, as Norris secured P3 in the Austrian GP. Although he had started off 6.5 seconds behind Hamilton with two laps to go, his final flourish saw him cut down the gap to 4.8 seconds.
This meant that Hamilton, having received a five-second penalty for a collision with Albon, dropped down to fourth. However, it was most certainly nervy inside the McLaren camp when Norris began the pursuit for his first podium.
6) Funniest moments from F1 Drivers’ streams
Despite the lockdown putting a hold on the real F1 season’s plans, it did not stop the drivers from having their own fun. Norris, Leclerc, Albon, and Russell are just some racers who are quite active on platforms such as Twitch.
The virtual races and competitions held between these drivers were quite competitive and entertaining. The funniest moment out of the montage was when Charles Leclerc dressed up as a banana to play the popular game Fortnite!
7) Valtteri Bottas reacts to taking pole position in Austria
Bottas’ penultimate flying lap in the Austrian GP qualifying was enough to get him the pole position. However, having started a last effort to better his timing, he ended up in the grassier segments of the track.
The Finn driver saw the funnier side of things and said that his W11 car cut grass better than his lawnmower! Quite frankly then, it is a surprise that Mercedes have not yet looked into opening a lawnmowers division!
8) Norris sings his way through Tuscan GP radio check
By now, enthusiasts of the sport are aware that McLaren’s Norris is a driver with a witty and funny personality. Earlier this season during the Tuscan GP practice sessions, the 21-year-old decided to take a different route in the mandatory radio check.
Singing to the tune of the popular song ‘Push The Feeling On’ by Nightcrawlers, Norris made sure that he was loud and clear through the team radio. Rest assured, his race engineer was probably glad the transmission of Norris’ voice was crystal clear!
