Amongst the proverbial ‘big 4’ of professional tennis, only Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray have managed to bag the famed gold medal at the Olympics. Even though players such as Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer have bagged the bronze and silver medals respectively, the bright yellow piece of metal has eluded them so far.

Interestingly, many greats of the game have failed to win a medal at the Olympics. Players such as Pete Sampras, Pat Rafter, and Marat Safin could never open their accounts at the Olympic Games. Since the summer games are held once in four years, the chances get more limited.

Andy Murray winning would make an amazing storyline

Recently, Tim Henman revealed that he is hopeful of Tokyo Olympic 2021 getting a green signal midst the raging pandemic. The former world no. 4 laid special emphasis on 2-time Olympic gold medalist Andy Murray.

It amazed Tim that the Brit still competes with a similar level of enthusiasm at the event.

Tim couldn’t hide his excitement for the fellow Brit and said, “Yeah, definitely. I’m not sure he would win [the] gold medal, but I think, given he’s the present holder and twice Olympic singles gold medalist, throw Andy Murray in the mix, I think it could be an amazing storyline.”

The former British No. 1 was in awe of the Williams sisters. He also waxed eloquent for Federer, praising the latter for his unending zeal even at his advanced age. If the Olympics are conducted next year, Roger will play as a 40-year-old.

Henman took note of it and said, “When you’ve seen the Olympic medals that Venus and Serena Williams have won over the years. It just adds credibility to tennis as a part of the Olympic movement. When you look at Murray’s wins in 2012, 2016, how much it meant to him as one of the best players in the world, and the desire of Djokovic and Federer to try and win that singles Olympic gold is incredibly exciting.”

The Tokyo Olympics were originally supposed to be held in the year 2020. However, because of the coronavirus pandemic, they were postponed by a year.
