It was the fourth round of Roland Garros 2020 or as some fans like refer as the ‘Pre-quarters’ of the tournament. World No.8 Kiki Bertens was up against Italian player Martina Trevisan. What happened next was yet another upset at the French Open 2020. The World No.159 completely stunned Bertens by winning the match 6-4, 6-4.
It was supposed to be a sitter for the Bertens. After winning the St. Petersburg Open in the early part of the year, fans expected her to be a strong contender for the French Open 2020. Also as big names like Ashleigh Barty, Naomi Osaka, and now Serena Williams missing, she had a golden opportunity to win her maiden Grand Slam but she failed to capitalize the moment.
Set-1: A set of topsy-turvy for Kiki Bertens
The Italian player started the set by winning the first game of the match. But, her happiness was short-lived. Bertens soon equalized the scoreline at 1-1 in the very next game. But then what happened was really astonishing. Martina Trevisan went on to win 4 consecutive games, breaking twice. What was embarrassing even more for Bertens was that she lost 4 straight points on her serve in the fourth game. The scoreline until now was 5-1 with the Dutch player trailing.
But then, Bertens gained some momentum. With the help of some powerful services and strong forehand winners, she managed to win the next 3 games. She broke twice and brought the margin narrower at 5-4. But, it was the Italian who broke again in the 10th game and managed to win the set 6-4.
Set-2: Game, Set, Match for Trevisan
The second set began with the 26-year-old Italian again winning the first game. She broke in the second game as well to extended her lead to 2-0. The third game became the talking point as it went on 2 deuces. Nobody was willing to give up easily. Eventually, it was the Trevisan again who held her nerves tightly and emerged as the winner. The scoreline was 3-0 with the seed No.5 trailing yet again.
The Dutch again showed some strong character. She played some great tennis and won the next 3 games after breaking in the second one. The scoreline was leveled again at 3-3. Both the players yet again showed their determination as the seventh game went for a total of 3 deuces. But just like the last time, Trevisan won it, leading at this stage 4-3.
The Italian broke yet again in the 8th game and extended her lead further at 5-3. It was now that she could do a big upset. But, it was too early to say this as Bertens broke in the next game. It was 5-4 again just like it happened in the previous set. But it was too late for Bertens now. The Italian finally won the set in the next game and ultimately the match 6-4, 6-4.
