The Philadelphia 76ers have been quite active in the 2020 NBA free agency. After another early playoff exit last season, the franchise is determined to turn things around.
In an attempt to do the same, the team recently acquired Seth Curry via trade. Curry has established himself as one of the biggest threats from beyond the arc over the course of his career. Considering the Sixers roster, Curry should fit perfectly within the team.
New Head Coach Doc Rivers welcomed Seth to the team with open arms. He had nothing but praise for the 30-year-old in a recent interview.
“I’ve coached my son, now I get to coach my son-in-law… One of the things we wanted to do – Elton [Brand], Daryl [Morey], and I – when we got here was create as much shooting as possible around Ben [Simmons] and Joel [Embiid]. This was a no-brainer.”
The lack of shooting around their two superstars was a glaring issue for Philly last season. In fact, both Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid prefer to drive through the lane instead of settling for a jumper. But this made the Sixers’ attack one sided and opponents figured them out quickly.
However, with Seth’s addition, coach Rivers can focus on other aspects of offense for the team. Rivers has shown utmost confidence in his skills ahead of the next season.
“Seth is a good kid – a great kid – with a great basketball IQ and he loves the game, so I’m looking forward to all of it… I think we’ve improved our basketball team, improved our basketball IQ, and increased our shooting, which is the one thing they said we didn’t have. Now we do.”
One might wonder if the addition of Curry will help the team in getting over the hump next year. We will find out soon.
Are the Philadelphia 76ers top contenders for the NBA title next season?
In the 2020-21 season, the Eastern Conference will become even tougher. However, the 76ers still remain one of the favorites to come out of the East. Moreover, this could be a championship or bust year for the Simmons-Embiid duo.
The two have put in phenomenal performances in the regular season, yet they failed to translate that into success during the postseason. Can they finally make a deep playoff run under Doc Rivers? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
