World No.2 Rafael Nadal produced another dominating performance in his 2nd-round match at the 2021 Australian Open. Nadal defeated Michael Mmoh in straight sets and won a whopping 84% points on his first serve.
Despite his lingering back problem, Nadal looked in imperious form and dropped just 7 games en route to glory.
During the post-match conference, a reporter asked Nadal whether he had his back spasms under control and sought an update on Nadal’s present condition.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion revealed that his back issue persisted, and his team is trying all possible solutions to improve the condition of the same.
Nadal talked about his slight change in his service motion due to this problem and admitted his preparation leading up to the Australian Open hadn’t been ideal.
Rafael Nadal gives injury update
The 2009 champion pulled out of the 2021 ATP Cup at the last moment and started his Australian Open title hunt without any match practice.
“No, not under control. I keep doing the things that I can. If you see my motion on the serve, it’s different than what I would like. But I’m trying to find solutions every day.
“The preparation, the last 15 days haven’t been the ideal one. But here I am, I won two matches in straight sets,” said Nadal.
However, Nadal seemed positive about his performance so far and hoped to find a solution for his back injury quickly. The Spaniard has a history of encountering early season injuries, forcing him to retire on many occasions.
“I have another opportunity to be on-court in two days and I have tomorrow to keep doing things, trying to find solutions for my back,” added Nadal.
Nadal will now face Cameron Norrie in the 3rd round at Melbourne Park. It will be the first time both players will play against each other. Who will emerge victorious?
