Naomi Osaka is breaking away from the pack and it is much evident with her Australian Open 2021 triumph. The Japanese tennis star is now a 4-time Grand Slam champion and reached a unique feat by defeating Jennifer Brady in straight sets at the Rod Laver Arena.
Naomi Osaka joins Serena Williams and Venus Williams in an elite list
Osaka always credits Serena Williams as her inspiration in the sport. The 23-year-old has a long way to go when it comes to catching Williams’ Grand Slam tally, but she’s now a part of an elite list along with the Williams sisters!
Naomi Osaka outclassed finalist Jennifer Brady 6-4, 6-3, to claim her second Australian Open crown and raised her career tally to four Majors titles.
It was a special moment indeed, and the Japanese player required just 1 hour and 17 minutes to get the better of her American opponent.
There aren’t many active WTA players with four Grand Slam titles like Osaka. Of course, there’s Serena with 23 and her older sister Venus Williams with 7. That’s it! That’s the list!
So when one brings up active WTA players with the most Majors titles, Serena Williams will be at the top, followed by Venus Williams at second, and then the latest entrant, Naomi Osaka at third!
Osaka and Angelique Kerber were tied at three Grand Slams each, but the former has now pulled away from the German with her latest triumph. Moreover, this is not the only feat that Osaka achieved through her Australian Open 2021 victory!
Osaka matches Roger Federer and Monica Seles in an impeccable achievement
Naomi Osaka has been to four Grand Slam finals, and she’s won them all. That’s a 100% win record in the first four Majors finals of her career, and that’s truly remarkable!
Here are Osaka’s victims in chronological order: Serena Williams (US Open 2018), Petra Kvitova (Australian Open 2019), Victoria Azarenka (US Open 2020), and Jennifer Brady (Australian Open 2021).
Only two other players in the Open Era have recorded a 100% success rate in their first four Grand Slam finals. The first one to do it was Monica Seles, and Roger Federer followed the pattern next.
Osaka has now marked her name on the list and might keep getting better. She’s turned into such an inspiring athlete, and one can hope for her to keep continuing on the same path!
