The Dallas Mavericks are proven trade experts, and one of their best came during the 2018 NBA Draft. They brought in Luka Doncic, a Slovenian youngster who had not played a single minute in USA. But in just 2-3 seasons, he has become one of the best players in the league.
Tonight, he showed his quality once again, as he had a career-high 46 points against the Pelicans. In this process, he reached 4000 career points in just his 159th game, and joined elite company. Only Michael Jordan and Shaquille O’Neal have achieved this feat faster since 1976. Those two need no introduction, and it is another reminder of how special Doncic is.
He finished the game with 46 points, eight rebounds and 12 assists. He also shot efficiently, going 17-30 from the field, and 5-8 from three. Most importantly, he was able to guide his team to their fourth win in a row.
Luka Doncic: Breaking records for fun
Since his debut, the Slovenian has broken a number of records. He already achieved the 4000 points feat tonight, but that wasn’t the only one. He had his 24th game with 30+ points and 10+ assists, which is as many as every other player in franchise history has ever had combined.
That is a reminder that Doncic is one of the most talented players in Mavs history, but fans will be expecting him to use that talent to bring them a ring. He is still only 21, which gives him ample time to help the Mavs win their second ring. He also has a talented co-star in Kristaps Porzingis to help him, and this duo is going to one of the best in the league soon.
Doncic steering Mavs back to playoffs
After being 8-7 in January, the Mavs went through a disastrous run. They won just once in eight games and slipped to 9-14. But they have successfully bounced back with four wins in a row after that.
Doncic’s form has been a huge part of this run. He averaged 35.5 points, 8.3 rebounds and 9.5 assists in these four games, and has stepped up as the leader. The Mavs need him to continue this form, as they push towards a playoff spot. They are currently 11th, and will hope to finish in the top eight by the end of the season.
