Iga Swiatek Creates History, Becomes First Polish Woman in Open Era to Reach French Open Finals

19-year-old Iga Swiatek stormed into French Open 2020 final as she beat Nadia Podoroska in a one-sided contest. In the process, she also became the first Polish woman to reach the French Open final. It has been a splendid run in which she hasn’t dropped a set yet. The scorecard after her semifinal clash read 6-2, 6-1.

Iga Swiatek has had a dream tournament at French Open 2020. Swiatek managed to reach both the women’s singles semifinal and women doubles semifinal. The 19-year-old polish player beat top seed Simona Halep in the 4th round.

For Nadia Podoroska, as well, it has been an unexpected journey at French Open 2020. She beat Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinal round. For Argentina, it has been a great few days as Diego Schwartzman has also sealed a semifinal spot.

Iga Swiatek vs Nadia Podoroska: First Set

The match started with Swiatek serving and the first few points it looked like she was nervous. Throughout the tournament, Swiatek smacked a high number of unplayable winners. The Pole got into her groove in the second game and surprised Podoroska.

She got the break in the second game itself. Swiatek was keeping the rallies small and Podoroska was having trouble dealing with the winners, and so Swiatek led 3-0.

Podoroska occasionally went deep near the baseline, which stopped Swiatek’s strong winners. Swiatek had issues dealing with Podoroska’s strokes close to the baseline, but her movement afforded her time to hit winners> She won the first set 6-2 in 36 minutes.

Second Set

Swiatek got even more into her stride in the second set as she hit winners after winners. Nadia looked dejected and couldn’t influence the match. Swiatek had quickly taken a 4-0 set lead and looked set to bagel Podoroska. However, Podoroska got a late break to open her account in the second set 4-1.

 Calm and composed, Swiatek broke again to lead 5-1. There was a visible effort from Podoroska, but Swiatek was playing like a champion. Swiatek easily sealed the set and match, 6-2, 6-1.

Swiatek will wait have to wait to know her French Open final opponent. One thing is for certain, she will face a Grand Slam champion in the final. Sofia Kenin takes on Petra Kvitova in the second semifinal. Swiatek with her performance stakes a huge claim at the women’s singles title at Roland Garros.
