‘Everyone in the Factory Needs It’ – George Russell Provides an Encouraging Update for Williams’ 2021 F1 Campaign

Making a considerable improvement from their 2019 campaign, the Williams F1 team gave the fans a better reflection of the qualifying performances of George Russell in 2020. He entered Q2 more often and came close to snatching points in Mugello and Imola.

They made the greatest percentage gains of anyone last season. While the foundations must have been laid down back in 2019, the new ownership group, Dorilton, also helped them. They brought over fresh capital to the team.

This gives them a chance to get back on the top end of the grid in 2022, when the new technical regulations reset the entire order. But this may come at the cost of the 2021 season since they can’t miraculously compete at a high level with previous rules.

However, Russell is crossing his fingers that this does not happen. He believes that they should keep building on their upward trajectory.

“We are making strides, all the team. We are one of the teams that are improving the most,” said Russell.

“Hopefully, with the investment from Dorilton, they are not just suddenly casting an eye towards 2022 with all focus there; they are looking for this year, they still want to get a result because everyone in the factory needs it.

“We work so hard, we are getting closer and closer and closer, it would be a shame to leave it aside next season.”

He thinks they should take advantage of this tactic that most teams on the grid would employ, “Definitely, our rivals are putting everything into 2022 which would definitely give us some opportunity.”

Williams’ family exit was emotional for George Russell

While Dorilton’s arrival brings in fresh investment, it also saw them part ways with the long-serving Williams family. Sir Frank Williams led the team to multiple world titles after finding it in 1977. Then, his daughter Claire was in charge. So, seeing them leave for Russell.

“With the Williams family leaving, it was emotional. They have been a massive part of the sport, their relationship with myself, the whole team. Everybody was so fond of Frank and Claire.”

In all honesty, we don’t expect Williams to make any giant leaps next season. While they do need to put their best foot forward in the 2021 season, in their own interest, it would be best to focus their efforts on 2022.
