“Don’t Know Why”: Young Stefanos Tsitsipas’ Fanboy Moment for Roger Federer

Stefanos Tsitsipas has often said that his idol growing up was Roger Federer. And now, as the Greek player has established himself as one of the players to look out for, comparisons with his idol are natural.

In one of Tsitsipas’ first interviews as a junior, he honestly talked about Federer. On being asked who is his favorite big player. Tsitsipas named Federer.

“It’s Roger Federer,” said a jubilant Tsitsipas.

Young Tsitsipas candidly spoke about Federer’s style and his one-handed backhand. Tsitsipas also uses a one-handed backhand, so his similarities with Federer continue to grow.

“I like his style, I like his one-handed backhand. He is a very calm player on the court.”

In the end, Tsitsipas ran out of words to describe Federer. The Greek admired the Swiss Masters but back then couldn’t explain why.

2019 ATP Season: Stefanos Tsitsipas beats Federer, Nadal and Djokovic

Tsitsipas played against Federer for the first time at the 2019 Australian Open. He stunned everyone as he roared to a victory in four sets. That year, Tsitsipas announced himself onto the scene. In 2019, apart from defeating Federer, Tsitsipas defeated Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal as well. Moreover, he won the ATP Finals in 2019 as well, becoming one of its youngest champions.

Further, Tsitsipas also represented Team Europe in the Laver Cup. In his team, he had Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, with whom he partnered in doubles.

There is always a talk of who could replace Federer on the tour. And many of them regard Tsitsipas as his heir. With almost a similar style, Tsitsipas is an interesting player to bet on. He is making strides forward.
