As the 2021 F1 season beckons, all teams are gearing up for it along with their respective drivers. Except for Mercedes, who are still in a contract limbo with Lewis Hamilton. With barely 40 days to go until we see cars on the track, this is becoming a bit of an enigma for everyone.
The world of F1 is aching to know what’s going on; the storm that may be brewing behind the scenes. However, as per F1 insider Craig Slater, the situation isn’t so tense at the ‘Silver Arrows.’ According to him, they have resigned themselves to the media attention it is going to get.
“Well, all is quiet still on the Sir Lewis Hamilton contract front. But I can report today that all is calm at Mercedes regarding this new contract,” said Slater on Sky Sports F1.
“They understand that while there isn’t confirmation, the longer this drags on, the more speculation there will be. They say that they are going to live with that.”
In what may be music to fans of the Briton, he also re-iterated Toto Wolff‘s point that the two parties intend to continue their partnership.
“The plan is for Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes to continue to work together. That’s still the plan. That’s what they have said all along.”
‘Business as usual’ for Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes
Given their rich success, Mercedes and Hamilton remain respectful of each other. His engagements with the team, including his work on Project One, hasn’t isn’t on a halt because of this delay.
According to Slater’s best understanding, “None of that is obstructed by the fact that he remains out of a contract. So, it is business as usual as far as Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton are concerned, contract or no contract.”
However, they must reach an agreement soon. They are unveiling their 2021 car, the W12, on March 2, and we expect them to have Valtteri Bottas‘ teammate with him on the presentation day, or, at the latest, when they leave for Bahrain a week later.
