Golden State Warriors have a richer history than most people remember. Obviously, none of it compares to the greatness we saw in the 2010s. However, that doesn’t mean that the players of the past didn’t leave behind a foundation that was further built on. Before the Warriors were a dynasty, they were the exact opposites. They were plucky underdogs, and their moment in the sun was massive.
The 2006-7 ‘We Believe’ Warriors are one of the most beloved teams in basketball history. The team had no superstar or elite player leading them, but they were a proper collective. They would pull off one of the greatest playoff upsets when they sent MVP Dirk Nowitzki and the top-seeded Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the playoffs as an eight seed.
Warriors have paid tribute to that team by bringing back the jersey for the 20-21 season. Matt Barnes of the 07-07 Warriors commented on the tribute.
“I love it. One thing I realized when I got a chance to go back for that ’17 Championship run is that there’s still so much love for that team there. Not only by the city, but by current players. Steph, KD, Klay, Draymond, you know they were all with the ‘We Believe’ movement. I think it is a great move and a great honor.”
Golden State Warriors pay tribute to a historic team
While the 06-07 Warriors weren’t champions, they did leave a mark in basketball history. They became one of the few teams to ever beat the first seed as the eighth seed. This team would have ruined the legacy of Dirk Nowitzki if he never won a title in 2011. They captured the imaginations of the fans with their gritty and fast-paced game. The fans responded in kind, helping the team to a 30-11 home record.
The Warriors left Oakland for San Francisco last season and had a very bad first year. They finished bottom of the standings with Steph Curry and Klay Thompson dealing with injuries. However, the Warriors are poised to jump right back into the title picture this season with their core returning.
Can they channel the ‘We Believe’ motto and continue defying expectations?
Thoughts on the new Dubs jersey??
