The two big guns of Formula 1, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton have maintained one of the healthiest relationships in F1 despite some heated moments in the past. The two invariably lauded and supported each other through various highs and lows.
Now, cherishing their delightful friendship, let’s take a look at the three Lewis-Vettel moments from the 2020 season that left the fans in awe.
The wave during Belgian GP practice session
Sebastian Vettel was setting himself up for a flying lap at Spa during FP2. As he exited out of turn 1, there was Lewis’ Mercedes, strolling ahead.
Unfortunately, Vettel caught up with Lewis at a pretty bad place – the tricky Turn 3. Consequently, the German had to abort his flying lap.
As the two drivers reached the exit of turn 5, Lewis made way for his former rival. The Ferrari driver, while getting past Lewis, waved his index finger at the Mercedes.
As a response, Lewis raised his hand to Vettel. It looked more like an apology from Lewis’s side for disrupting Vettel’s flying lap while the latter acknowledged his rival’s apology.
Vettel’s conversation with Lewis Hamilton in Turkey
It definitely was an incredible podium ceremony at the Turkish Grand Prix, earlier this year. Lewis officially won his seventh world championship title. Meanwhile, Vettel, taking advantage of his teammate’s mishaps, crossed the line in P3.
Hence, the two rivals finally joined each other on the podium after a rather long wait. Coincidentally, he was able to watch his decade-long friend recreate history. Hence, Vettel parked his Ferrari in the parc ferme and raced to Lewis’ Mercedes to congratulate him on the astonishing achievement.
He lent his head into the Mercedes cockpit and the two had a long chat. Although their conversation remained a mystery for a while, Vettel later revealed what he said to his colleague.
“I told him that it’s very special for us because we can witness history being made today. I think he is the greatest of our era for sure,” he said.
The Lewis phone call after Vettel lost his Ferrari seat
Vettel lost his morale early in the 2020 season when Ferrari denied the German a seat for 2021. He never managed to revive his confidence back as he remained the slower Ferrari car throughout the season.
However, Lewis did not remain quiet watching Vettel’s career go haywire. Instead, he had a phone conversation with Vettel and lent his advice by requesting him to move on. Later, while speaking to the media, Vettel revealed what Lewis said on the call.
“He called me to motivate me to move forward. We called and wrote often,” he said.
Lewis and Vettel have been part of the Formula 1 paddock for over a decade now. The duo made sure that the 2010s didn’t turn out to be a straightforward decade and produced some incredible wheel-to-wheel racing.
It looks like the fans might just get a year or two more to witness the two world champions race alongside each other before either of the drivers bid adieu to the sport. Could their retirements mark the end of an era?
